Portal to the Morrigan Shapeshifter Goddess
Appearing before great battles as the goddess of war, death, and fate, the Morrígan offered prophecy and favor to heroes and gods alike. She was often depicted circling the battlefield in the form of a raven to carry away and eat carrion, though she could also appear as a beautiful woman to seduce powerful men. She was a cunning shapeshifter and a terrifying omen of death.
The Morrigan is also associated with several sacred and natural sites across Ireland.
One of the most prominent characteristics of the Morrígan is her tripartite nature. In many stories, she appears as both an individual and as three goddesses acting under a single name.
The identities of the three goddesses vary depending on the source. In most cases, Badb, Macha, and Nemain are named as the Morrígan, though sometimes it is given as Badb, Macha, and Dannan/Danu (or Anand/Anu). Badb in particular is associated with the Morrígan’s appearance as a raven on the battlefield. These goddesses are also sometimes listed as sisters of the Morrígan. The discrepancies of the members of the Morrígan are likely due to differences among local legends.
Since the Mórrígan is not only an individual, but sometimes a trio – though which three are included differs by source, the title ‘Great Queen’ is also held by a group of Goddesses, as well as other beings linked to each other by that name, including the Badb, Macha, Nemain, Fea, and Anu.
Crow on the battlefield, wolf, eel, heifer, white-haired hag, daughter of a king – the Mórrígan is all of these things and more as she shape-shifts through the lands. She embodies power, sovereignty, prophecy, magic, and the mysteries of life and death.
To understand the Mórrígan is to delve into the heart of Irish mythology and spirituality. Her teaching tales offer us insight into the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors, as well as wisdom that can be applied to our lives today.
By working with the Mórrígan, we can tap into our own inner warrior spirit (whether we are fighting physical battles, or any other kind), and connect with the land and its cycles in profound ways.
